The way consumers discover local businesses is changing again.
Yelp has entered into a licensing partnership with OpenAI that gives ChatGPT access to Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and other business information for local recommendations. According to Axios, Yelp is providing OpenAI with real time local business data that can be surfaced directly within ChatGPT responses.
For businesses, this is more than another AI partnership. It is further evidence that online reputation is becoming an important part of AI visibility.
Your reviews no longer just help consumers decide whether to choose your business after they find you. They are increasingly part of the information AI can use when deciding which businesses to recommend in the first place.
Yelp Becomes a Direct Source for AI Local Discovery
Consumers have traditionally discovered local businesses through search engines, maps and review platforms. AI is adding another path.
Instead of searching for “Italian restaurants near me” and evaluating a list of results, a consumer can ask ChatGPT:
“What are the best Italian restaurants near me for a business dinner that are quiet, have good service and consistently get positive reviews for pasta?”
Questions like this contain several layers of intent that traditional keyword search does not always handle well.
With access to Yelp data, ChatGPT can potentially evaluate business information alongside the actual experiences consumers describe in their reviews. Yelp’s CEO described the company’s depth of review content as particularly valuable for answering local queries.
The integration is already extending beyond recommendations. On August 10, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT can search restaurant reservation availability using OpenTable, Resy and Yelp, with Yelp reservation search available in the United States and Canada.
This moves AI search another step closer to connecting discovery directly with customer action.
Reviews Are Becoming AI Visibility Data
Earlier this year, we wrote about how reviews and review responses were becoming increasingly important to AI search. Review platforms provide large amounts of structured and unstructured information that AI systems can use to understand businesses and customer experiences.
The Yelp and OpenAI partnership makes that relationship much more direct.
Consider what is contained within a typical review.
Customers describe service, food quality, cleanliness, wait times, atmosphere, staff interactions, pricing, value and dozens of other details about their experience.
Those details can answer questions that a star rating alone cannot.
A restaurant may have a 4.3 rating, but its reviews could repeatedly mention that it is great for large groups. Another location with the same rating might consistently receive praise for fast service and family friendly dining.
When consumers ask AI increasingly specific questions, the substance of customer feedback can become particularly valuable.
This changes the reputation management question from:
“What is our rating?”
to:
“What does our customer feedback teach AI about our brand?”
Consistency Across Locations Matters Even More
For multi location brands, AI discovery creates another reason to look beyond enterprise level averages.
A brand might have a strong overall reputation while individual locations tell very different stories.
One location may consistently receive praise for hospitality. Another may have recurring complaints about speed of service. Another may have inaccurate hours or outdated business information.
AI powered local recommendations operate at the point where a consumer is making a specific decision about a specific location.
That makes location level reputation performance increasingly important.
Brands need visibility into review volume, sentiment, recurring topics, listing accuracy and competitive performance across every location, not simply a national brand average.
Listings Are Part of the Equation Too
The partnership is not limited to review text. Axios reports that Yelp is also licensing ratings, photos and other business information to OpenAI.
That reinforces another important part of AI visibility: business information needs to be complete, accurate and consistent.
Hours, categories, location information, photos and other listing attributes provide context that can help determine whether a business matches what a consumer is asking for.
A strong reputation paired with inaccurate business information creates an avoidable disadvantage.
Managing listings and managing reputation are increasingly becoming parts of the same visibility strategy.
This Does Not Mean There Is a New ChatGPT Ranking Formula
It is important not to turn this development into another SEO checklist.
OpenAI has not published a local business ranking formula that says a specific rating, number of reviews or review frequency guarantees placement in ChatGPT recommendations.
AI generated recommendations also do not operate exactly like traditional search rankings. Responses can change depending on the consumer’s question, location, preferences and other context.
The better objective is to build strong, consistent signals that accurately communicate why customers choose your business.
That means improving the underlying customer experience and ensuring the resulting customer feedback is being properly monitored, understood and managed.
What Multi Location Brands Should Do Now
Businesses do not need to reinvent their reputation strategy because of AI. They need to execute it more consistently and understand their review data more deeply.
Monitor Yelp alongside your other major review platforms. Yelp content can now have value beyond Yelp itself.
Keep every location accurate. Business information, categories, hours and other listing data should be complete and consistent.
Look beyond star ratings. Analyze what customers repeatedly say about service, product quality, value, atmosphere and the other attributes that influence buying decisions.
Identify location level weaknesses. Enterprise averages can hide individual locations that may be creating negative signals.
Understand your competitors. AI recommendations are ultimately about selection. Knowing why consumers praise competing businesses can reveal where your brand is gaining or losing an advantage.
Respond to customer feedback. Reviews are a public representation of the customer experience. Thoughtful responses also demonstrate how the brand engages with customers when things go right or wrong.
Reputation Management Is Becoming AI Strategy
The Yelp and OpenAI partnership is another indication that the lines between reputation management, local search and AI discovery are disappearing.
Reviews have always influenced consumer decisions.
Now the information contained in those reviews can also help AI understand businesses, compare alternatives and recommend where consumers should spend their money.
For multi location brands, that creates both an opportunity and a risk.
Businesses with strong customer experiences, accurate listings and consistent reputation management are building a growing body of data that can help communicate their strengths across traditional search, review sites and emerging AI experiences.
Businesses that ignore their reputation may increasingly be allowing AI to learn about their brand from problems they have not addressed.
Merchant Centric helps multi location brands turn customer feedback into actionable intelligence by bringing reviews, reputation management, listing management, AI powered analysis and competitive insights together in one platform.
As AI changes how consumers search, the goal remains the same: understand what customers are saying, improve what drives their decisions and make sure your brand is positioned to be chosen.
